Traditional architecture of an affordable Pueblo Mágico

Pueblos Mágicos are not cheap by decree. Some — San Miguel, Tulum, Bacalar in high season — are pricier than Mexico City hotels. Others cost less than an Airbnb in a trendy CDMX neighborhood. This ranking uses the median Airbnb nightly price as an objective affordability signal.

The cheapest right now is Pinos, Zacatecas, with a median price of $13 MXN / night. The tenth-ranked, Tepoztlán, is around $1,314 MXN / night — a range where any budget traveler fits comfortably.

Why median and not average

An average is skewed when one $10,000/night premium listing drags up a pueblo where most stays run $1,200. The median ignores outliers and reflects what a typical traveler actually pays. If you see very different numbers when searching Airbnb yourself, you're probably looking at specific listings, not the whole market.

Watch what you save

A cheap pueblo doesn't compensate for the flight if it's on the other end of the country. Always add: lodging + transport + time. A pueblo in Chihuahua at 600 MXN/night costs a flight or 15 bus hours from CDMX — your real nightly cost explodes. For short trips, the cheapest pueblo near where you already are is usually the right answer.

Frequently asked questions

01.How is the average nightly price calculated?

We take the median of active Airbnb listing prices for that pueblo. It's in Mexican pesos, before taxes and cleaning fees. Prices shift seasonally — a pueblo can be cheap in September and expensive during Easter week.

02.Does cheap mean bad?

No. It means Airbnb inventory in that pueblo is priced below the national average. Many affordable Pueblos Mágicos have high composite scores — check each profile for detail. Cheap lodging isn't a predictor of how interesting the place is.

03.Why aren't all 177 Pueblos Mágicos here?

Several very small pueblos don't have enough Airbnb inventory to calculate a reliable average. Rather than display a misleading number, we exclude them from the price ranking. You'll find them in our composite-score ranking instead.
